Guides, Maps and Information

There are a number of books, maps and online resources that direct you to bike rides in the CTL area. We've listed a few below, but it is not a comprehensive list. Let us know if you have any favorites that we should know about.

Here are two excellent recreation maps detailing various road and mountain biking in this area that are available at most Truckee outdoor supply stores;

1. Adventure Maps, Inc. (www.adventuremaps.net) puts out a Lake Tahoe Trail Map (entitled: mountain biking, hiking and cross-country skiing Relief/Contour Map) that covers the Tahoe Basin and Truckee.

2. Mountain Biking Press (www.fineedge.com/mountainbiking/) has a Recreational Topo Map of the North Lake Tahoe Basin (A Guide to Mountain Biking, Hiking, 4WD and Camping).

Both of these maps detail and describe rides all around the region and are available at local book and bike shops.

The Internet is also a good source of maps and information on local biking:

A. The Back Country is a very nice outdoors shop on Donner Pass Rd in Truckee. Their web site, www.thebackcountry.net/index.mv, provides a detailed guide of many good road and mountain biking rides. Click on the ‘bulleted’ words “Mountain Biking” or “Road Biking” on the left had side of their Home Page and then click on “Where to Go” and you’ll get to their cleverly designed guide with many photos and maps.

B. The Sierra Sun had an article in April 19, 2005 that listed and described a number of rides.

C. Gorp.com is an outdoor oriented web site that may require you to register (free) and they might try to sell you a thing or two. They are not just local, but with a little searching they have some excellent ride descriptions. Their web page for the Tahoe National Forest rides is quite useful.

D. Tahoe's_Best.com web site has a nice directory that features bike paths, road trips and mountain bike parks.
